Salesbury, William
(c. 1520–c. 1584)
   Biblical Scholar.
   Salesbury was born in Llansannan, Wales. He was educated at the University of Oxford and he trained as a lawyer. For most of his life he lived in Plas Isa in Denbighshire. He is remembered for his translation of the Book of Common Prayer and the New Testament into Welsh. He seems to have used erasmus’s edition of the Greek text, Jerome’s Vulgate, tyndale’s English version and luther’s German translation. Salesbury’s version proved to be the foundation for all later Welsh translations and was an important factor in the spread of Protestantism in Wales.
